A president is supposed to be the head of the state. It was stated in Pakistan’s constitution that the President has the supreme powers. He can break down the National Assembly. Pakistan had been moved once again from semi-presidential republic to a parliamentary law-based one after the eighteenth amendment in the constitution. That system stated that the President didn’t have all the supreme powers, instead, he had limited ones. The system, however, provided more powers to the Prime Minister and he could execute the decisions accordingly. President is picked up by the Electoral College. Pakistan’s first president was Iskander Mirza. His tenure was from 1899 to 1969. He was a member of the Republican party and took over office on 23rd March’1956 and left office on 27th October 1958. Ayyub Khan, Yahya Khan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Fazal Ilahi Chaudhary, Mohammad Zia-Ul-Haq, Ghulam Ishaq Khan, Farooq Leghari, Mohammad Rafiq Tarar, Parvez Musharraf, Asif Ali Zardari, and Mamnoon Hussain were some of the personalities that had been the presidents in the past. Pakistan even had three acting presidents from the year 1993 to 2008. Current President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is Arif Alvi.
President visits many different countries, interacts with different presidents during his tenure to strengthen the relationships with other countries. Arif Alvi is currently the thirteenth president of Pakistan. Along with being a renowned politician, he was also a member of the National Assembly. By profession, Alvi is also a dentist.
His father was a dentist and so he also decided to study dentistry. After completing his bachelors and master’s degree, he started to practice dentistry and then decided to open his own Dental Hospital named Alvi Dental Hospital.
Alvi had tied the knot with Samina Alvi. Samina had given birth to four children. One of his children, named Dr. Awab Alvi, had also practiced medicine just like his father and grandfather. All four of Alvi’s children had been settled abroad and have their families there.
Alvi feels contented with his grandchildren and thinks them as one of the greatest pleasures he got in his life. In his young age, he used to play many games like hockey and squash. Now he appreciates easygoing games and watches them as well.
Political Career of President of Pakistan
Everyone gets to see ups and downs in their life. Alvi had also experienced many good and bad times in his political career but he remained firm in his position. He had decided to make Pakistan a better nation to live in and therefore, did whatever could be possible.
His political career has roots from his student life. During his student life, he was a member of the student union. Later, became the president of the student unions. He was a dedicated and hardworking person who had fought bravely for Pakistan’s democracy during General Ayyub Khan’s tenure. He took a bullet on his right hand while struggling but still the bullet couldn’t break his dedication and faith. Instead, he thinks that the bullet makes him remember that he had done something for his homeland and identifies his struggle.
Alvi had been into politics for a long time. In 1979, he was a candidate of Jamaat-e-Islami in Karachi. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf has an important value in his life. He was the founding member of this Tehreek. He had a strong adherence to the party and stood together with Imran Khan in his struggles. Then his hard work paid off and he became the Vice President of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI). Later on, he was promoted and became the President of PTI in 2016.
Along with political works, he had been a trustee of numerous charitable organizations. He also engaged himself with numerous humanitarian movements. He thinks that the world is almost near to the fourth modern unrest. For this, he launched an initiative named PIAIC (Presidential Initiative for Artifical Intelligence and Computing).
He propelled this activity to encourage education and research, to open business opportunities in Artificial Intelligence, Cloud-based processing, and Internet of Things. Many non-profitable and profitable organizations along with different partnerships are running this initiative. This program had an objective to enroll 100,000 students a year. Karachi was the city where this program had been launched with 12 thousand students enrolled. Program appears to extend in cities like Islamabad, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Quetta, etc.
Alvi decided to pursue his dentist profession. He started to practice dentistry and opened a hospital named Alvi Dental Hospital. He was declared as an Ambassador of the American Board of Orthodontics. Alvi had also been elected as the president of Pakistan Dental Association (PDA) and Asia Pacific Ocean (APO).
His professional career grew tremendously each day. Along with being ambassadors and presidents, he even became the Chairman of 3rd Pakistan International Dental Conference. It was the first time in history that any Pakistani had been elected as the Advisor of the Dental Federation of the world and got votes from more than 100 countries twice for three years. Alvi used to occasionally write blogs. Jinnah’s sister, Shirinbai established a Trust and made Arif Alvi a trustee of that trust. She gave all her possessions along with the Mohatta Palace.
